Laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK) continues to be a great option for many people who desire freedom from glasses or contacts. As technology advances, so has our ability to provide enhanced outcomes and accuracy. Newer technologies that contribute to this are updated laser platforms, and pre-operative imaging utilizing both wavefront and topography guided calculations.
While laser vision correction is best for younger patients without other ocular issues, other options are available for patients that don’t qualify. Patients with severe nearsightedness may benefit from clear lens extraction, or an intraocular contact lens (ICL). For patients with cataracts, the same type of laser used for LASIK (the femtosecond laser) can be employed in order to assist the surgeon, and improve outcomes, in patients with astigmatism. It is also used in patients receiving special types of ‘presbyopia’ correcting lenses, which can provide an increased range of vision for some patients (as compared to the basic ‘monofocal’ lens) when indicated.
